The Center has made a provision of an estimated 3,244 INR-Crore for the Kolhapur-Vaibhavwadi railway route. The land acquisition works will begin once the code of conduct for ZP elections concludes. The railway line will connect Konkan with western Maharashtra, giving a major boost to port development and regional connectivity.
The planned Kolhapur-Vaibhavwadi railway route will stretch 106 Km and include 10 stations. These will be Vaibhavwadi, Sonali, Kumbharwadi, Kusur, Umbarde, Mangvali, Upale, Ainari, Saitawde, Kale, Bhuye, Kasba Bawda, Market Yard, and Kolhapur. Designed to enhance regional connectivity, the line will feature 26 tunnels and 5 flyovers.

The center took this decision to move forward with the Kolhapur-Vaibhavwadi railway line during a recent review meeting on port development. Out of the total 6,500 INR-Crore cost, 50% (3,244 INR-Crore) has already been allocated in the Union Budget. The remaining share will be announced by the state government and supported through the Railway Board. Originally approved in the 2016 Union Budget, the project was stalled after the initial survey conducted by a private company.
