JSW Steel and its Japanese partner JFE Steel Corporation have announced an estimated 5,845 INR-Crore investment in their electrical steel expansion initiative. These would be developed across two key sites—Vijayanagar in Karnataka and Nashik in Maharashtra.

At Vijayanagar, the planned capacity has been revised from 62,000 Tonnes to 100,000 Tonnes per Annum. Meanwhile, the Nashik facility—formerly Thyssenkrupp Electrical Steel India—will undergo a five-fold expansion. The facility will reach a capacity of nearly 250,000 Tonnes per Annum by FY 2027-28. Together, the JSW-JFE electrical steel expansion will achieve a total CRGO capacity of 350,000 Tonnes annually. The Nashik unit alone will see an estimated 4,300 INR-Crore in capex, while Vijayanagar will receive 1,545 INR-Crore.

The JSW-JFE electrical steel expansion supports India’s push for import substitution and energy self-reliance. The move aims to triple India’s capacity for Cold-Rolled Grain-Oriented electrical steel (CRGO), a critical material for transformers and high-performance generators. Moreover, it aligns with national goals for renewable energy, decarbonisation, and digital infrastructure.
