This second part of the three-part series presents a detailed zone-wise analysis of the North, East, and West Zones. It further highlights key trends, investment values, and major ongoing and awarded projects that define the growth trajectory of the nation’s water infrastructure landscape.

The series delves into key projects, investments, and policy initiatives undertaken during FY 2024–25, offering an in-depth look at how India’s water supply and distribution network advanced toward greater efficiency, resilience, and sustainable growth.

Overview

The North Zone recorded steady progress in water supply and distribution initiatives during FY 2024-25, supported by projects under the Jal Jeevan Mission and urban rejuvenation programs. States such as Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Punjab focused on strengthening rural water networks, laying new pipelines, and upgrading treatment facilities. The region’s projects emphasized both service expansion and quality improvement, reflecting the government’s continued push toward universal water access. Several high-value projects were recorded, indicating strong capital investment and strategic planning to meet growing water demands in urban and semi-urban areas. The North zone also saw efforts to improve inter-state water distribution efficiency and reduce system losses.

In the East Zone, substantial investments were observed in large-scale water infrastructure, particularly in Odisha, West Bengal, and Jharkhand. The focus remained on enhancing drinking water coverage, rural pipeline expansion, and the development of surface and groundwater-based systems. The inclusion of high-value dam and water tunnel projects further underscored the region’s emphasis on long-term water security and interlinking of river systems. Priority was given to upgrading aging distribution networks and expanding water treatment capacity to address both urban and industrial needs. Collaborative initiatives with central agencies helped accelerate project execution and improve service reliability across the zone.

The West Zone maintained strong momentum in water infrastructure development, led by Maharashtra and Gujarat. Several high-value projects in dam construction, water recycling, and distribution network modernization were implemented to meet rising urban and industrial demand. The region’s efforts were characterized by the integration of smart water management technologies and large-scale augmentation works aimed at ensuring sustainable supply in drought-prone areas. Emphasis was placed on water conservation measures and optimizing resource allocation through modern monitoring systems. The zone also benefited from significant public-private partnerships, enhancing efficiency and investment inflow into key water supply projects.
