The Union Cabinet approved a 1,067.35 INR-Crore extension of the existing Ahmedabad Metro North–South corridor from GIFT City to Shahpur on Tuesday, February 24. The project will be executed by Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited (GMRC). Its a 50:50 joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Gujarat. This decision aims to further enhance regional connectivity and support urban transit infrastructure.
The extension will span 3.33 Km and include three elevated stations. The elevated metro stretch will link key nodes between GIFT City and Shahpur. The corridor will also strengthen transit accessibility for commuters and businesses. Furthermore, GMRC will implement the construction and complete the project within four years. Authorities project that the extension will serve approximately 23,702 daily passengers by 2029.

The project will create about 1,000 jobs during the construction phase. Additionally, it will create around 250 positions in operations and maintenance once functional. It also builds on the existing metro phases — Phase I and Phase II — which total 68.28 Km of operational routes. With this approval, the Ahmedabad Metro extension will accelerate transit-oriented development along the corridor. It will also reinforce infrastructure growth across Gujarat.
