Ashok Leyland has commenced construction of a battery pack manufacturing facility at Pillaipakkam near Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The Ashok Leyland battery pack manufacturing facility will involve an estimated investment of 400–500 INR-Crore. The company held the groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday, March 11. The project forms part of investments under a Memorandum of Understanding signed in September 2025.
The facility will manufacture advanced battery packs for electric commercial vehicles. It will support the localisation of EV battery pack production and strengthen the domestic supply chain for electric mobility. The project also aligns with the Tamil Nadu Electric Vehicle Policy 2023 and the National Mission on Transformative Mobility and Battery Storage. Additionally, the facility will focus on developing efficient, safe and reliable battery pack solutions for next-generation electric vehicles.

Once operational, the Ashok Leyland battery pack manufacturing facility is expected to strengthen Tamil Nadu’s position as a major hub for EV manufacturing. The development will also support India’s electric mobility ecosystem and generate new opportunities for skilled manufacturing employment in the state.
