Bihar approves Kosi-Mechi Irrigation Project for Seemanchal, targets 2029 completion

The Bihar Government has approved the Kosi-Mechi river linking project as a step towards agricultural development and flood control in the Seemanchal Region. This project will provide irrigation facilities to 2.14 Hectares (Ha) across 4 districts, namely, Araria, Purnia, Kishanganj, and Katihar. 

The estimated cost of this project is 6,282.32 INR-Crore, expected to be completed by 2029. The Kosi-Mechi project is a part of the Quick Irrigation Benefit Programme under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana. Consequently, the Central Government is contributing 60% of the funds (3,652.56 INR-Crore).

Apart from significant irrigation advantages, this project will help reduce the floods caused by the Kosi river, control the slit flow and improve water management. With the construction of this project, the canal’s water conveyance capacity between 0 to 41.3 Km will increase from 15,000 to 20,000 Cusecs. The main canal will be extended from 41.30 Km to 117.50 Km. Additionally, 4 branch canals (229 Km) and 6 distributaries (48 Km) will be constructed.
