Bihar Cabinet approves 472 INR-Crore for Bhagalpur Airport land acquisition

Bihar Cabinet approved an estimated 472 INR-Crore for acquiring 931 Acres in Sultanganj block for the proposed greenfield Bhagalpur Airport under the Center’s UDAN Scheme. Consequently, authorities will move forward to fulfil a 42-year demand of residents seeking regular air connectivity. In addition, the cabinet sanctioned an estimated 1.21 INR-Crore for the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to prepare pre-feasibility reports for airports at Bhagalpur, Motihari, and Chhapra

Sultanganj was chosen for the Bhagalpur Airport due to its strategic location, accessibility to adjoining districts, and availability of land suitable for large-scale construction. Earlier in March 2024, the Bihar cabinet approved plans for a new airport at Bhagalpur because the existing airfield was too small. Subsequently, the local administration identified suitable land in consultation with the Civil Aviation Ministry and AAI, finalising Sultanganj and Goradih blocks for development.

The greenfield Bhagalpur Airport will cater to passengers, pilgrims, and visitors from neighbouring countries like Bhutan and Nepal, especially during the Shravani Mela. Sultanganj MLA Lalit Narayan Mandal added that the airport would become a key driver of economic development and significantly improve connectivity for Bhagalpur and the surrounding districts. Commercial air services last operated from Bhagalpur in 1983 but ended due to low passenger volume and limited financial viability. However, this project aims to resolve past limitations and ensure sustainable operations at the new Bhagalpur Airport.
