The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to set up a 100 MW floating solar power plant on the Tansa and Modak Sagar dams. The project, developed by Mahatma Phule Renewable Energy and Infrastructure Technology Limited (MahaPreit), will operate for 25 years under the “Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer” model. With an estimated investment of 546 INR-Crore, it is expected to generate 219 Million Units of clean power every year.
Power will be supplied through Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL’s) open-access network at a fixed rate of 4.25 per unit. This will help major facilities like the Pise Panjrapur and Bhandup water treatment plants reduce their energy costs. Additionally, the project does not require separate expenditure on land or approval processes, ensuring it remains cost-efficient and environmentally sustainable

According to civic officials, the BMC solar power plant aligns with Mumbai’s Climate Action Plan. It also supports the city’s transition to clean and sustainable energy. Using existing reservoirs for solar power will help cut carbon emissions and support long-term energy sustainability.
