This project entails the construction of a 14.1 Km Water tunnel from Yewai (MBR) to Kasheli (Bhiwandi), in Thane, Mumbai.

Project Overview:

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to construct a 14.1 Km tunnel from Yewai (MBR) to Kasheli (Bhiwandi). This tunnel would be divided into two parts: from Yewai to Tarali (7.15 Km), and Tarali to Kasheli (6.95 Km). The estimated construction cost of this project is 3,600 INR-Crore, and it is expected to be completed by 2031.

The scope of the project:

The diameter of the proposed water tunnel will be 5.3 Meters and will use at least two full-face rock Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs). This Yewai to Kasheli tunnel will supply water to the western suburbs, while the existing network of pipelines will work as a backup.

The scope of the work entails two vertical shafts of 14 Meters in diameter at Yewai and Kasheli. The depth of the shafts will be 178 Meters and 157 Meters, respectively. These will be constructed with the help of drilling and the Controlled Blasting Method (CBM), with a reinforced concrete support system.

APCO Infratech Private Limited has been appointed as the EPC contractor for this project. Meanwhile, Tata Consulting Engineers (TCE) works as the design consultant for the same.
