India is set to build its first Twin-Tube Brahmaputra Underwater Road–RailTunnel in Assam. The project will allow both vehicular traffic and train movement, significantly boosting strategic and civilian connectivity in the Northeast.

An inter-ministerial panel headed by the Expenditure Secretary has given in-principle approval for the tunnel. The design covers a 15.8 Km twin-tube structure connecting Gohpur and Numaligarh. One tube will carry a single railway track, making it India’s first underwater road-cum-rail tunnel. The overall project length will be 33.7 Km, including the underwater tunnel, approach roads, and railway track. The estimated cost stands at 18,600 INR-Crore. The twin tunnels will be unidirectional, with two lanes each, and built at a depth of 32 Meters below the riverbed.

Once completed, travel time between Gohpur and Numaligarh will drop sharply. The current six-and-a-half-hour journey will shrink to just 30 minutes. The distance will reduce from about 240 Km to 34 Km. The Twin-Tube Brahmaputra Underwater Road–RailTunnel project aims to enable faster movement of security forces and military equipment during emergencies. Simultaneously, it will improve connectivity to Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, and other northeastern states.

As per the design, the railway tube will not allow vehicles when trains are in operation. Trains will run on electricity on a specially designed ballastless track. The cost will be shared by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the Ministry of Railways, and the Ministry of Defence. The proposal will now move to the Union Cabinet for final approval. Moreover, the Twin-Tube Brahmaputra Underwater Road–RailTunnel project is expected to be completed within five years after the work is awarded.
