The Union environment ministry’s expert panel has approved the first stage of THDC’s proposed 1,200 MW pumped hydropower project near Malshej Ghat in Maharashtra. This approval enables THDC to commence the Environmental Impact Assessment studies for the Malshej Ghat Hydro Project, estimated to cost 6,815 INR-Crore. The project is expected to support India’s renewable energy goals and boost power storage using pumped hydro technology.
The project site will span 310 Hectares (Ha) across Thane and Pune districts, including 74 Hectares (Ha) of forest land. It will sit near the villages of Diwanpada, Sawarne, and Thitabi Tarf Vaishakhare, areas marked as eco-sensitive under the Western Ghats protection draft.
The plan includes a 28–31 Meters rock-filled dam for the upper reservoir. The lower reservoir will receive water from the Kalu River. Since the site is 3 Km from the Kalsubai Harishchandragad Wildlife Sanctuary, a sub-committee will conduct a field inspection before the next approval stage.

Looking ahead, THDC plans to use a closed-loop system to generate clean energy without continuous river withdrawal. This method aligns with India’s target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil power capacity and advancing net-zero goals. As the review moves forward, the proposal reflects a strong focus on sustainability, regional development, and clean energy growth. It also supports long-term progress linked to the Malshej Ghat Hydro Project.
