Chandigarh is set to establish its first compressed biogas (CBG) facility at the Dadumajra dumping ground. The Dadumajra biogas plant will be developed jointly by the Municipal Corporation (MC) and Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) at an estimated 125 INR-Crore.
Spread across an anticipated 10 Acres, the project is expected to be commissioned by December 31, 2028. The Dadumajra biogas plant will process 200 Tonnes Per Day (TPD) of segregated organic municipal solid waste and 30 Tonnes of cow dung. Additionally, it will produce compressed biogas along with byproducts like fermented organic manure and liquid organic manure. Furthermore, IOCL will install a leachate treatment plant and ensure full environmental compliance.

As per the MoU, the MC will supply segregated waste free of cost. Besides, IOCL will handle cow dung collection and transportation. Moreover, the MC will lease the land to IOCL for 15 years at a nominal rate. IOCL will design, construct, finance, operate, and maintain the plant independently without charging the MC. Finally, the Dadumajra biogas plant will include a mandatory green belt covering 33% of the site. The facility will strengthen Chandigarh’s waste-to-energy ecosystem, reduce landfill pressure, and promote sustainable urban development.
