HCC bags 901 INR-Crore railway tunnel project from Northeast Frontier Railway

Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) won a major order for the railway tunnel project, valued at an estimated 901 INR-Crore. The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) awarded the contract to the HCC–VCCL joint venture, in which HCC holds a 65% stake.

The scope of work for the HCC railway tunnel project covers the construction of new Tunnel‑28 on the Tupul–Imphal broad‑gauge line. HCC will build a 3.5 Km main tunnel, along with all associated civil and structural works. The package includes design and proof‑checking of a ballast‑less broad‑gauge track, ensuring durability and safety. Additionally, the company will manage the supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of railway systems, electro‑mechanical equipment, and tunnel ventilation systems.

The contract also involves the construction of approach roads and other ancillary facilities to integrate the tunnel with surrounding infrastructure. Altogether, the scope reflects HCC’s expertise in complex tunnelling and railway engineering, while strengthening connectivity in the Northeast.

The Tupul–Imphal line is part of India’s broader effort to expand and modernise rail connectivity in the Northeast. Moreover, the HCC railway tunnel project will improve passenger and freight movement, strengthen regional integration, and support economic growth in Manipur and adjoining states.
