The Maharashtra Government has approved India’s largest floating solar project on the Jayakwadi Dam, valued at 10,000 INR-Crore. It has received clearances from the State Government, Pollution Control Board, and Central Environment and Irrigation Departments. National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) will spearhead the project, which will generate 1,342 MW of clean energy to supply affordable power to farmers and industries in the Marathwada region.
The Jayakwadi floating solar project will cover an anticipated 4,252.95 Hectares (Ha), about 12% of the dam’s total area. It is designed to reduce water evaporation by 28%. Moreover, the plan includes three solar clusters — two in the south and one in the north — located around 3 Km from the eco-sensitive zone. Officials said the government will begin work within a month and complete it in two years. They have also allocated nearly 40 acres at three sites for power stations to support steady energy distribution.

Furthermore, this large-scale solar initiative highlights India’s growing commitment to renewable energy and regional progress. It will generate around 200 local jobs while ensuring that 88% of the reservoir remains open for fishing. Designed to operate for 25 years, the project underlines Maharashtra’s focus on clean power, water conservation, and sustainable growth.
