In a major step to boost urban mobility, the Maharashtra Cabinet has approved a 24,000 INR-Crore investment to expand metro networks in Mumbai, Pune, Thane, and Nagpur. This is one of the state’s most ambitious transport initiatives. It aims to ease road congestion, cut travel times, and improve last-mile connectivity for millions of commuters.
Under the metro expansion plan, Mumbai will see network extensions linking key residential, commercial, and business hubs. The Cabinet has cleared Mumbai Metro Line-11, a 17.51 Km extension of Metro Line-4 from Anik Depot–Wadala–Gateway of India, with 70% underground and 14 stations. The 23,487.51 INR-Crore project will be executed by Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) based on a DPR by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). The state will seek central funding support, including 3,137.72 INR-Crore equity and 916.74 INR-Crore interest-free debt. This will improve east-west connectivity, ease congestion, and integrate Mumbai’s metro grid.

Pune will see major upgrades, including shifting the Katraj station 421 Meters (M) south and adding Balajinagar and Bibwewadi stations to the Swargate–Katraj corridor. The Cabinet approved 683.11 INR-Crore for this, with Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) contributing 227.42 INR-Crore and the rest funded through loans. These upgrades will ensure better bus-metro integration and faster project completion.
Thane will gain new links with Mumbai, while Nagpur’s Orange and Aqua lines will be extended to strengthen its Tier-II metro status. Overall, the plan will cut emissions, create jobs, boost real estate, and fuel economic growth across all four cities.
