The Maharashtra Cabinet committee on infrastructure, led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, has approved the revised design and project cost of the Uttan-Virar sea link. The Government decided to reduce the number of lanes from eight to six and to cut the ramp widths. Consequently, the overall cost will fall by an estimated 30,000 INR-Crore.
Moreover, the design follows Mumbai’s coastal road model to ensure smoother traffic. The project will connect areas such as Uttan, Vasai, and Virar. The total road length will be 55.12 Km, including the 9.32 Km Uttan connector, 2.5 Km Vasai road, and 18.95 Km Virar link. Moreover, the 18.95 Km Virar connector, earlier planned till Chikhal Dongri, will now merge with the Delhi-Vadodara-Mumbai expressway in Palghar district. The Uttan-Virar sea link will also provide direct access to the Vadhawan Port region.

In June, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) presented the revised design to Fadnavis. Subsequently, he instructed officials to prepare a detailed report for Government clearance. As a result, the new plan was presented on Tuesday, November 5.
