On Tuesday, June 17, the Maharashtra Government approved the development of the Virar-Alibaug Multi-Modal Transport Corridor, a 165 Km arterial route. This route is designed to reduce the traffic congestion in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region on a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model. The project is being handled by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC).
Phase I of the corridor spans 96.41 Km, connecting Navghar in Palghar district to Balavali in Pen taluka. This corridor will pass through Vasai, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Ambernath, Panvel, Uran, Pen, and Alibaug. The Cabinet approved a financial provision of 22,250 INR-Crore for land acquisition, bringing the total estimated cost of Phase 1 to 37,013 INR-Crore.

The Virar-Alibaug corridor is among MMR’s largest road projects, aiming at reducing traffic for vehicles entering Maharashtra from Gujarat and North India. The previously floated bids for the first phase have been scrapped due to sharp inflation. Under the BOT model, a private developer will build and operate the corridor during the concession period.
