The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (Metro Water) has received Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance to construct an underground sewer in Thoraipakkam, located in the Sholinganallur zone. This area currently lacks an organised sewage disposal system, making the project a crucial step toward improving sanitation infrastructure.
The clearance was granted during a recent Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) meeting. As per the proposal, Metro Water will lay 84 Km of underground sewage lines at an estimated 266 INR-Crore. The project will include six new pumping stations and three lifting stations, with about 4 Km of the network falling within the CRZ area.

Once completed, the underground sewer in Thoraipakkam will benefit more than 14,000 households in divisions 193, 194, and 195. The project was first announced in the state assembly in August 2021. Moreover, it is funded under AMRUT 2.0. The state government will contribute 30%, and the union government will contribute 25%. Meanwhile, the remainder of the fund will be secured from Metro Water.
