The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has approved the expansion plans of Adani Power Ltd, NLC India, and GMR Power for their existing thermal power generation plants. This will add a combined capacity of 2,470 Megawatts (MW).
Adani Power Ltd: The Environment Ministry’s Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) approved the expansion of Lanco Amarkantak Power plant in Korba, Chhattisgarh. It was acquired by the Adani Group in September 2024. The company plans to expand its capacity with an additional 1,320 MW (660 MW x 2). Furthermore, to increase their thermal capacity from 17.5 GW to 30.67 GW, they plan to add 13.12 GW by FY32.

NLC India: EAC has cleared NLC India’s 800 MW Phase-II of the Talabira Thermal Power Project in Odisha. The tender for Phase I of the Central Public Sector Enterprise’s (CPSE) Talabira power plant, which will have a capacity of 2,400 MW, was won by BHEL. After the completion of Phase II, the ultra-supercritical pit-head power plant’s total capacity will reach 3,200 MW.
GMR Group: An imported coal-based power plant owned by the GMR Group in Odisha received EAC clearance for its expansion. This will increase the plant’s capacity by 350 MW, from the existing 1,050 MW.
