The Public Works Department (PWD) announced a major initiative to strengthen bridges across state highways. The plan involves upgrading 235 bridges in nine districts, backed by an estimated expenditure of 1,640 INR-Crore.
The project will increase load‑bearing capacity and enhance the structural resilience of critical bridges. Moreover, it includes landslide treatment on seven routes to improve safety. Out of 585 bridges on 103 state highways, 407 have spans of 10 Meters or more, and 111 already meet class A loading standards. The project is scheduled to start in July 2026. Furthermore, it will be executed in phases to minimize disruption while ensuring timely delivery.

The upgrades will accommodate rising tourist inflows and local transport needs. Moreover, stronger bridges will ensure readiness for military and heavy‑equipment movement. All works will follow the Indian Road Congress and Indian Standards specifications. Meanwhile, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide financial assistance. Consequently, the PWD bridges upgrade marks a landmark investment in the state’s transport infrastructure.
