Southern Railway invited tenders for the Athipattu–Gummidipundi rail expansion project in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The project involves laying two additional railway tracks between Athipattu Pudhunagar and Gummidipundi. It carries an estimated investment of 285.6 INR-Crore. Authorities issued the tender in late March 2026 to enhance rail capacity on this corridor.

The project will develop third and fourth railway lines over a 25 Km stretch on the Chennai–Gummidipundi section. Furthermore, the scope includes track laying and associated railway infrastructure to support suburban, express, and freight train movement. This corridor currently faces capacity constraints due to shared usage by multiple train services. Moreover, the additional tracks aim to improve operational efficiency and reduce congestion across the route.

It will also support improved commuter movement and strengthen rail infrastructure in northern Chennai.
