The Telangana Government has approved 7,360 INR-Crore for a mega water augmentation project. This project will bring an additional 20 TMC of Godavari water to supply to the Telangana Core Urban Region (TCUR) and Greater Hyderabad, along with 27 municipalities surrounding the city.
This project is a part of the Godavari Drinking Water Supply Scheme and aims to improve the drinking water infrastructure. It requires 60 Acres of land, of which the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) owns 50 Acres. The remaining 10 Acres will be acquired from the Forest Department. Meanwhile, HMWSSB has completed the tender process.
Out of the 20 TMC, 15 TMC will be supplied through Phases II and III. Furthermore, the remaining 5 TMC water will be allocated for the replenishing of Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar reservoirs under the Musi River Rejuvenation Project.

According to the Detailed Project Report (DPR) and blueprint made in 2015, raw water will be drawn from Mallannasagar and supplied to Ghanpur, where a 1,170 MLD capacity Water Treatment Plant (WTP) will be constructed. Furthermore, the government will construct two additional WTPs to treat the remaining 5 TMC. Osman Sagar plant will have of 120 MLD capacity and Himayat Sagar plant will have 70 MLD.
A 232 Km pipeline will also be laid to link Mallannasagar with Ghanpur, Muthangi, Osman Sagar, and Himayat Sagar. This project in Telangana will increase the total water supply for HMWSSB from 580 MGD to 880 MGD and supply water to over 1 Crore people across Hyderabad.
