The Light House Nagpur is a climate-sensitive residence designed by SJK Architects. It is built for a multigenerational family living in a dense urban neighbourhood. Located in Nagpur, Maharashtra, the region faces extreme summers with temperatures rising above 40°C. To respond to this climate, the home features operable timber lattices inspired by the traditional jaali. This feature minimizes heat, allows natural airflow, and creates beautiful, diffused patterns of light and shadow across the interiors. The Light House Nagpur reflects a modern yet culturally rooted approach to architecture, offering comfort, privacy, and connection through thoughtful spatial planning.
Architectural Context and Inspiration
The family envisioned a home that celebrated memories of traditional havelis with central courtyards, jharokhas, and craft-based detailing. Inspired by North Indian and Maharashtrian residential architecture, SJK Architects drew design cues from wadas and vernacular building practices that suit local climatic conditions.

To meet the family’s evolving needs, the residence replaces a two-storey bungalow on a compact 38 m x 23 m plot and now rises as a six-storey structure. Each design decision prioritizes natural light, cross-ventilation, comfort, and long-term adaptability for future generations.
Spatial Planning and Function Distribution
An eight-foot-wide central atrium with a skylight forms the core of the home and connects all floors visually and socially. The atrium gently filters sunlight, illuminating the lower levels and forming a vibrant social hub.
Vertically, the home is zoned to offer privacy and comfort for each generation. The ground floor includes the grandmother’s suite, the main kitchen, an office suite, and garden-facing outdoor spaces for relaxation. Meanwhile, the next three floors accommodate the family, with each level offering two master bedrooms, a guest room, a pantry, a family terrace, and formal living areas for daily connection.

Additionally, the fifth level functions as a dedicated entertainment zone, ideal for gatherings and celebrations. The topmost level completes the Light House Nagpur with a wellness suite that includes a gym, jacuzzi, and spa, along with a landscaped terrace offering expansive city views.

Climate-Responsive Features
Deep balconies, adjustable timber screens, and selectively placed jharokhas form the building’s outer envelope. These elements help regulate heat, filter sunlight, and ensure privacy. The Accoya pine used for the screens is sustainably sourced, FSC-certified, weather-resistant, termite-treated, and designed for a 50-year external lifespan. The operable sliding-folding mechanism offers flexibility, while the mosquito mesh and glazing options allow variations in lighting, airflow, and privacy.
Inside, the home maintains a calm aesthetic through natural materials like white Esil marble, brass, recycled Burma teak, and soft textures. Custom furniture and lighting pieces bring warmth and personal identity to the interiors. Artwork and handcrafted details inspired by regional weaving patterns and cultural motifs add character while keeping the design refined and understated.
