On Wednesday, June 25, the Union Cabinet approved Phase II of the Pune Metro Rail project. This project is set to extend the existing Vanaz–Ramwadi corridor with two elevated stretches: Vanaz to Chandani Chowk (Corridor 2A) and Ramwadi to Wagholi/Vitthalwadi (Corridor 2B).
This Pune Metro Rail corridor would span 12.75 Km, and connect Chandani Chowk, Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi, and Wagholi. The total estimated cost of this project is 3,626.24 INR-Crore. The cost would be equally shared by the Central Government, the Maharashtra Government, and external funding agencies. The expansion is expected to be completed within 4 years.

Maha-Metro will oversee all civil and systems works, as well as their implementation. The construction of this east-west corridor will boost the usage of public transport in Pune’s growing suburban and IT hubs. This would further lead to reduced congestion, faster and more sustainable travel.
