Center nods 9,779 Crore tunnel projects linking four districts in J&K

The Government of India has approved tunnel projects linking four districts in Jammu & Kashmir at an estimated cost of 9,779 INR-Crore. The approval was granted in a recent meeting of the Public Investment Board under the Ministry of Finance. The proposal was submitted by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). The projects will improve road connectivity across Udhampur, Doda, Kishtwar and Anantnag districts.

The approved works include two major tunnel developments on NH-244. The first is the Sudhmahadev–Dranga tunnel in Udhampur district. It will be a uni-directional twin tube tunnel with a total length of 12.85 Km, including 2-lane plus paved shoulder approaches. The second is the Singhpora–Vailoo tunnel connecting Kishtwar district with Anantnag. It will be a twin tube tunnel with a total length of 38.61 Km, including 2-lane plus paved shoulder approaches. Both projects will be executed under the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) mode. The scope includes tunnel construction, approach roads and associated infrastructure. Additionally, the tunnels will incorporate ventilation systems, safety infrastructure and modern tunnel engineering components.

Once completed, the tunnel projects linking four districts will significantly reduce travel time and improve logistics movement in the region. The projects will also enhance connectivity in remote areas and support economic activity by improving access to key corridors. Additionally, the initiative will strengthen regional infrastructure and enable faster movement of goods and passengers.
