Coromandel Court, a sprawling 12,000 SqFt residence in Bengaluru, reflects the lives of its owners: the Chief Marketing Officer of a billion-dollar global company and his wife, a Vice President at a billion-dollar organization.
Together, they envisioned a home that celebrates their South Indian heritage while embracing European influences gathered through a lifetime of travel. The result reflects a modern Indian sensibility: rooted, worldly, and richly layered.
Biggest Design Challenge
The central challenge was to balance the demands of high-velocity global careers with the desire for a slow, culturally rooted home life. As busy professionals raising two young children, the clients wanted a modern sanctuary that felt personal and connected to their heritage.
They did not want a sterile contemporary space. Instead, they wanted their children to grow up with a strong cultural foundation shaped by South Indian art, craft, and mythology. The home also needed to accommodate entertaining, family activities, and the practical demands of everyday living.

Design Strategy
The design team developed a distinctive approach called Heirloom Modernism. The concept brings together the soul of the past and the functionality of contemporary living. Antique timber, indigenous crafts, and classical art meet an open-plan layout, acoustic technology, and a sleek modern kitchen. The residence, however, is not treated as a conventional living space. Instead, the design team envisioned a future heirloom that would carry the family’s stories across generations.
The entrance foyer features semi-precious stone inlay, establishing a strong emphasis on craftsmanship. From here, 20 Ft ceilings lead into a dramatic sunken living room. 3 Ft deep and shaped precisely to the client’s vision, this conversation pit forms the heart of the residence. It connects naturally with the outdoor bar and gazebo. This further creates a seamless setting for gatherings and leisure.

Across the home, South Indian influences meet Kalighat paintings, miniatures, Pichwai artworks, and artefacts collected from across India. These elements create an eclectic and deeply personal narrative. Meanwhile, the formal dining room centers on a gate-legged teakwood table, paired with dining chairs upholstered in Ritu Kumar fabrics. Moreover, the kitchen introduces a bold contemporary contrast through its sleek blue palette and high-performance functionality.
Other spaces extend this design language in different ways. The guest bedroom features Chennai-inspired embroidery, while the jewel-box powder room beneath the staircase and a curated staircase niche showcase handcrafted details in unexpected corners. A double-height family room offers a relaxed everyday retreat. The home theater, designed for fifteen people, combines leather recliners, plaid acoustic walls, cherished film posters, and a dedicated refrigerator for extended movie nights.

The principal suite serves as the residence’s focal point. Additionally, a custom-designed princely poster bed anchors the room, while a Raja Ravi Varma painting of Radha in the Moonlight integrates seamlessly into the wardrobe panels. This detail transforms functional storage into an intimate art display for the couple.
At the center of the home, a tranquil pooja room reinterprets temple architecture through a contemporary lens. Furthermore, the children’s room introduces a playful contrast with trundle beds, a colorful palette, and a cozy mezzanine loft. A handcrafted divider made from brass pipes threaded with Channapatna toys captures the project’s central idea: the meeting of traditional craft and youthful imagination.

Architect’s Perspective
Coromandel Court reflects the clients’ appreciation for heritage, global craftsmanship, and storytelling. Moreover, their collection of antiques, travel-inspired artefacts, and South Indian cultural references creates a home that feels both rooted and cosmopolitan.
Completed in nine months, the project demonstrates how a contemporary residence can accommodate modern lifestyles without losing its cultural identity. Through Heirloom Modernism, Coromandel Court treats heritage not as something to preserve behind glass, but as a living part of everyday life—one that the family can experience and pass on to future generations.
