The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has approved the construction of five new district jails at a combined cost of over 1,446 INR-Crore. The decision was announced on Thursday , June 4, to address overcrowding in existing correctional facilities across the state. The UP new district jails will be developed in Kanpur Nagar, Moradabad, Auraiya, Lalitpur and Bhadohi. The approved projects will add capacity for 6,212 inmates across Uttar Pradesh.

The Kanpur Nagar District Jail is largest project, which will be developed in Narwal tehsil. Meanwhile, the Moradabad District Jail will come up on an anticipated 97.15 Acres of land in Sisrakheda village. The Auraiya District Jail will be constructed on 60.70 Acres in Sherpur Saraiya village. Additionally, the government will develop separate facilities in Lalitpur and Bhadohi to strengthen correctional infrastructure in both districts.
The UP new district jails will expand correctional capacity across the state and help reduce overcrowding in existing facilities. It will also support the government’s prison modernization and infrastructure expansion programme.
