West Bengal gets 3,500 INR-Crore defence push with 5 brownfield expansion projects

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has laid the foundation stones for 5 brownfield expansion projects in West Bengal. The projects involve Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) and Yantra India. Together, the developments carry an investment of nearly 3,500 INR-Crore.

Singh laid the foundation stones virtually from Kolkata. The event was attended by West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. The projects include 3 facilities of GRSE and 2 facilities of Yantra India. The developments will expand shipbuilding and ship refit capabilities. Meanwhile, GRSE has signed lease agreements with Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Kolkata for 2 shipyards along the Hooghly. The company has also secured a 32 Acre riverside property at Raichak.

The West Bengal defence projects will expand industrial and defence manufacturing capacity in the state. Further, the developments will strengthen GRSE’s capabilities in ship construction and refit. The projects are also expected to support employment generation and opportunities for ancillary industries, particularly MSMEs.
