The Monochrome Rouge is a contemporary residence in Indore designed for a multi-generational family.
The design challenge lay in creating a spatial framework that offered every unit independence while fostering shared experiences and togetherness. The result is a home that blurs the lines between autonomy and connection, and between structure and emotion.
Biggest Design Challenge
The primary design challenge was creating an environment where multiple generations could maintain their independence while sharing meaningful experiences. The design establishes distinct zones for each family unit while connecting them through common spaces.
The architecture expresses a duality of solid and void, monochrome and vibrancy, intimacy and openness. While the spatial composition remains restrained and geometric, the interiors introduce warmth and emotion through bold yet delicate accents of red.
The client, an avid DJ in his leisure, influenced this expressive approach. The experimentation with red became an integral part of the design language. These subtle colour insertions give the home its identity and name—The Monochrome Rouge.
The palette of whites, blacks, and greys creates a neutral canvas for rouge to punctuate moments of vitality, passion, and familial warmth. The palette also draws inspiration from the client’s premium, well-travelled lifestyle.

Design Strategy
A defining architectural element of The Monochrome Rouge is the sculptural ferro-concrete column on the front façade. Beyond functioning as a substantial structural member, it represents the symbolic core of strength and unity within the home. The column allows the architects to introduce expressive geometry while maintaining structural performance, balancing art and engineering.
This design language subtly reappears at select points throughout the residence, establishing a continuous architectural dialogue between different volumes. The front façade features tapering balconies—both upright and inverted—that extend outward and upward before subtly transforming into staggered roof forms. This approach maintains the individuality of each family block.
Four vertically aligned walls add a dynamic quality to the elevation. Rising in hierarchical order, they create rhythm and vertical emphasis. These elements frame the structure while also creating glimpses of depth and layering within the residence.
The transitions break the rigidity of the horizontal surfaces, creating a balanced composition that remains grounded yet expressive. Consequently, the arrangement of columns, vertical walls, and staggered balconies makes the façade an expression of the internal zoning, architectural intent, and lifestyle of its inhabitants.
Spatially, The Monochrome Rouge unfolds vertically. The ground floor forms the social core, with a lounge, bar, home theatre, and outdoor spillover spaces that blur the boundaries between built and open areas.

The first floor integrates a delicately detailed temple block, which forms the spiritual nucleus of the home, along with intimate family lounges. Meanwhile, the upper levels extend into private terraces, gardens, and wellness areas, including a gym, salon, and gazebo for leisure and reflection.
East-facing orientation brings abundant daylight into the residence. Skylights and courtyards further enhance natural ventilation and passive cooling. At the same time, shaded western openings minimise heat gain and reinforce indoor comfort while reducing dependence on mechanical systems.
Materials & Product Specifications
The Monochrome Rouge celebrates tactility and craftsmanship through a carefully selected material palette. Ferro-cement, Black Martini marble, White Statuario marble, mother of pearl, and metallic finishes come together to create a modern yet timeless aesthetic.
Texture and light play a defining role throughout the residence. Polished surfaces contrast with raw elements, creating a sensory balance that complements the home’s restrained architectural language.
The material palette also reinforces the central design concept of contrast and cohesion. Dark and light surfaces create visual depth, while metallic and mother-of-pearl details introduce subtle variations in texture and reflectivity.

Architect’s Perspective
The design concept for The Monochrome Rouge emerged from the idea of contrast and cohesion, much like the family that inhabits it. The residence expresses a duality of solid and void, monochrome and vibrancy, and intimacy and openness.
The architecture brings together autonomy and connection, allowing individual family units to retain their identity while remaining part of a larger shared environment. At the same time, the restrained geometry creates a strong architectural framework for more expressive interior elements.
In essence, The Monochrome Rouge redefines luxury through simplicity, emotion, and experience. The residence establishes a timeless dialogue between structure, light, materiality, and human connection.
