Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is set to become a global aviation maintenance hub following the European Union Aviation Safety Agency’s (EASA) Part-145 certification for its Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) unit. The certification enables the facility to service international aircraft, including those registered in Europe.
This approval clears the way for the Thiruvananthapuram MRO expansion. The plan includes the construction of a dual-unit hangar, capable of accommodating one wide-body or two narrow-body aircraft. Operated by Air India Engineering Services Limited (AIESL), the facility is the first in South India and only the second in the country to receive this prestigious certification.

The new hangar will be built adjacent to the existing six-hectare MRO complex. This facility already houses twin hangars, component bays, workshops, and a dedicated apron. Moreover, the upgraded facility will include enhanced structural repair bays, full aircraft overhaul zones, and modern component testing sections. Electrically operated systems and sustainable design features will further elevate its global standing.
With certifications from DGCA, FAA, EASA, and AS9110C, the Thiruvananthapuram MRO expansion is expected to attract contracts from major international airlines, especially from Europe, Southeast Asia, and the Gulf. The development also positions the facility to support advanced military platforms under licensed sub-contracting.
