The Union Cabinet has approved the construction of the Marakkanam Puducherry highway with a total estimated capital outlay of 2,157 INR-Crore. This 46 Km, 4-lane highway will be developed under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM). Moreover, it is part of the Chennai–Puducherry–Nagapattinam–Tuticorin–Kanyakumari Economic Corridor.
Of the total stretch, 34.7 Km will be developed as a greenfield bypass to divert heavy traffic away from Puducherry city. The remaining 11.3 Km will upgrade the existing two-lane NH-332A section. Moreover, the corridor is expected to reduce travel time between Marakkanam and Puducherry from 60 minutes to just 35 minutes.

It will also connect key transport hubs, including Puducherry and Chennai airports, two railway stations, and Cuddalore Port. It will also improve access to Auroville township and JIPMER, a national medical institute. With an estimated daily traffic of 17,800 passenger car units, the corridor is designed to meet rising transportation demands in the region.
