The New Mangalore Port berth upgrade project received approval from the Government of India on Wednesday, March 25. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways cleared the proposal to redevelop Berth No. 9 at New Mangalore Port in Karnataka. The project involves an investment of 438 INR-Crore and will be implemented under the Public-Private Partnership model.
The project will redevelop Berth No. 9 to handle liquid bulk cargo, including crude oil, petroleum products and LPG. It will increase the berth draft from 10.5 M to 14 M, with provision to extend up to 19.8 M. This upgrade will allow handling of vessels up to 200,000 DWT, including Very Large Gas Carriers. The project will achieve a cargo handling capacity of 10.90 MTPA, with a minimum guaranteed cargo of about 7.63 MTPA by the fifth year. The scope includes dismantling old infrastructure and constructing modern marine facilities. The project will follow the DBFOT model and is expected to be completed within 2 years.

Once completed, the New Mangalore Port berth upgrade project will enhance liquid cargo handling capacity and improve port efficiency. It will also strengthen energy logistics and support industrial growth across Karnataka and nearby regions.
