Rajasthan and Haryana have signed a memorandum of agreement (MoA) to implement the 1994 Upper Yamuna River Board agreement. The pact clears the way for the long-pending Upper Yamuna Water Project, which carries an estimated investment of 34,102 INR-Crore.

The Upper Yamuna Water Project will provide long-term drinking water security to water-scarce regions of Rajasthan while benefiting parts of Haryana through new water infrastructure. Under the agreement, Rajasthan will receive 577 Million-Cubic-Meters of Yamuna water. The water will be transported from the Hathnikund Barrage in Haryana through an underground pipeline network spanning about 295.5 Km. The project includes three underground pipelines, each measuring 3.6 M in diameter. Additionally, it covers inspection roads, artificial reservoirs and a modern water management system. Officials have designed the infrastructure to supply drinking water to 10 locations in Haryana, making the project beneficial for both states.

The Upper Yamuna Water Project will be implemented through a Special Purpose Vehicle named Rajasthan-Haryana Yamuna Water Project SPV (RHYW-SPV). Meanwhile, Rajasthan has completed the Detailed Project Report (DPR) and submitted it to the Central Water Commission‘s e-PMS portal. Haryana has also granted in-principle approval for the proposed pipeline alignment. The project will strengthen regional water infrastructure and support long-term development across water-stressed areas of Rajasthan and Haryana.
