The Puducherry Government has approved a new pipeline project at an estimated cost of 2,500 INR-Crore. It forms part of a larger development programme with a total outlay of 4,750 INR-Crore, supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
In the first phase, the project will cover key areas of Puducherry, including Yanam and Mahe. Works will include laying new pipelines and setting up sewage treatment plants. Meanwhile, the government is reviewing the feasibility of a 50 MLD seawater desalination plant at Kalapattu, Tippurayapet, Narambai, and Mullodai to address water scarcity.

The Chief Minister, N Rangasamy, highlighted the importance of completing the Puducherry pipeline project to enhance sanitation and water management in the city. Meanwhile, Officials have been instructed to fast-track proposals for renovating lakes, increasing water storage, and converting them into drinking water sources. The government is seeking 470 INR-Crore from the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti for these works.
