Karnataka Cabinet approves 2,215 INR-Crore tunnel road to ease congestion between Bengaluru Mekhri Circle

The Karnataka Cabinet approves an estimated 2,215 INR-Crore tunnel road project to ease congestion between the Hebbal flyover and Mekhri Circle. This upgrade will add a short twin-tunnel road and an elevated corridor to ease local traffic and improve access to the Bengaluru airport. As a result, the Karnataka tunnel road plan highlights the state’s commitment to modern and efficient mobility.

The project will be carried out by the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) and the Bengaluru Development Authority (BDA). Since the National Highway stretch cannot be widened, the design makes use of available land within the GKVK campus and areas around Hebbal Lake. The plan includes an underpass at Mekhri Circle, an underground route through GKVK, and new roads along both sides of the lake. Additionally, most of the route lies on government-owned land, keeping land acquisition costs low at 25 INR-Crore.

The Karnataka tunnel road initiative aims to provide long-term traffic relief at one of Bengaluru’s busiest junctions. Feasibility studies and traffic department inputs supported this plan, ensuring smooth movement for all vehicle types. With this focused approach, the state positions the project as a major step toward building future-ready urban infrastructure.
