Union Home Minister Amit Shah has laid the foundation stone for India’s first state-built BSL-4 Bio-Containment Lab at the Gujarat Biotechnology Research Center in Gandhinagar. The project, worth an estimated 362 INR-Crore, marks a major step in strengthening India’s biotechnology and health security capabilities.
The BSL-4 Bio-Containment Lab will be developed over an anticipated 11,000 SqM. Moreover, it will be India’s second such high-level facility after the National Institute of Virology in Pune, and the first to be constructed by a state government. Therefore, it represents a milestone in decentralizing advanced biosafety infrastructure.

Once operational, the lab will provide scientists with a secure environment to study highly infectious viruses. Additionally, it will reduce reliance on foreign laboratories and accelerate testing for dangerous pathogens. Furthermore, the facility is designed with global best practices to study zoonotic diseases, which account for most human infections.
The BSL-4 Bio-Containment Lab aligns with India’s One Health Mission, safeguarding both human and animal health. Besides, it will play a key role in strengthening the country’s bio-safety framework. With this facility, Gujarat aims to become a national leader in biotechnology. Overall, the BSL-4 Bio-Containment Lab is expected to attract investment, create jobs, and foster innovation in India’s biosciences sector.
