Tamil Nadu CM lays foundation stone for Knowledge City, oversees MoUs exchange

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, on Thursday, January 29, laid the foundation stone for the Tamil Nadu Knowledge City at the India Global Education Summit 2026 in Chennai. The state government also announced a series of MoUs with global universities, research labs, and business houses in Tamil Nadu.

TIDCO, the nodal agency, received Letters of Intent (LoI) worth an estimated 355 INR-Crore for the Knowledge Tower. These commitments could create 2,255 direct and 9,650 indirect job opportunities. Moreover, eight MoUs were signed to set up advanced facilities in areas such as quantum computing, agritech, electric vehicles, carbon capture, clean energy, and health-AI.

  • IIT-Madras will set up a translational research and testing lab for electric vehicles with 200 INR-Crore investment. Meanwhile, its global arm will also launch a skilling facility.
  • Acumen Group has pledged 120 INR-Crore to promote the project, creating thousands of jobs.
  • The University of Melbourne will invest 35 INR-Crore to establish a research facility in quantum computing and agritech.
  • Additionally, the Aarksee Group will focus on carbon capture and sustainability.

Other Tamil Nadu MoUs include partnerships with the Illinois Institute of Technology for a Center of Excellence in advanced manufacturing, clean energy, and health-AI. TIDCO also signed agreements with the University of East London for an innovation hub and with NISAU U.K. to strengthen talent development. Together, these MoUs highlight the strategy of Tamil Nadu to build a global research and innovation ecosystem.
