The Andhra Pradesh Cabinet has approved an estimated 641 INR-Crore for the construction of the Neradi barrage across the Vamsadhara River. The long-pending irrigation project is located in north coastal Andhra Pradesh. The approval revives a project that had remained stalled for nearly two decades. It follows the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti’s gazette notification, which cleared the way for the state’s construction of the barrage.
The Neradi barrage project will include the barrage and its associated infrastructure. The project features a right head sluice with a design capacity of 8,000 cusecs for Andhra Pradesh. It also includes a left head sluice to meet Odisha’s requirements. Additionally, the Odisha government will acquire approximately 106 Acres of land within its territory and hand it over to Andhra Pradesh. The Andhra Pradesh government will bear the compensation and land acquisition costs. Further, the agreement allows Andhra Pradesh to utilize up to 8 TMC of water annually.

The Neradi barrage project is expected to strengthen irrigation infrastructure in the Vamsadhara basin. Furthermore, the project will improve groundwater recharge and support cultivation in drought-prone areas. It is also expected to enhance water availability and address drinking water shortages across the region.
