Maharashtra Water Projects: State signs MoUs worth 23,800 INR-Crore for Hydroelectric expansion

The Maharashtra Government‘s Water Resources Department has signed multiple MoUs for new pumped‑storage hydroelectric projects. The agreements involve a total estimated investment of 23,800 INR-Crore. These will further add 5,800 MW of pumped‑storage capacity to the state’s power ecosystem.

Under the MoUs, the government signed three major projects. These include the Western Ghats Pumped Storage Project in Pune and Raigad districts, the Koyna Stage‑6 Pumped Storage Project in Satara, and the Sarovar Pumped Storage Project in Ahilyanagar. The agreements were signed with companies such as JSW Neo Energy Ltd, Mahagenco Renewable Energy Ltd, and New Asian Infrastructure Development Pvt Ltd.

The investment is expected to generate 11,500 jobs across construction, operations, and allied services. Maharashtra has already identified a massive 76,115 MW potential for pumped‑storage development across various sites. Moreover, the new projects will harness natural advantages offered by the Western Ghats and existing dam systems. These water projects in Maharashtra will further mark a major step toward making the state India’s pumped‑storage powerhouse.
