The Maharashtra Government has approved Phase 1 of the Virar-Alibaug corridor project across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Authorities cleared the proposal during the Cabinet Infrastructure Committee meeting held on Monday, March 11. The 14-lane access-controlled corridor carries an estimated cost of 31,793.47 INR-Crore. The project will improve connectivity between JNPA, Navi Mumbai International Airport and the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link.
Phase 1 will include construction of a 96.41 Km stretch from Navghar in Vasai taluka to Balavali in Pen taluka. The complete corridor will span 126.06 Km across 104 villages in Vasai, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Ambernath, Panvel, Uran, Pen and Alibaug talukas. The route will connect NH-48, NH-848, NH-61, Mumbai-Vadodara Expressway, Mumbai-Pune Expressway and NH-66. Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation will execute the project under the DBFOT (Design, Build, Finance, Operate, Transfer) model through a public-private partnership framework.

The state government has fixed a 3-year construction deadline for the project. Additionally, authorities have prioritised the overlapping stretch near Mote Karanjade for completion within 1.5 years. Once operational, the Virar-Alibaug corridor will reduce congestion across Mumbai’s road network and strengthen regional logistics connectivity across the MMR.
