The Union Cabinet has approved the Arunachal hydro projects with a total investment exceeding 40,069 INR-Crore on Wednesday, April 8. The approval covers two major hydroelectric projects in Arunachal Pradesh. These include the 1,720 MW Kamala Hydro Electric Project and the 1,200 MW Kalai-II Hydro Electric Project.
The Kamala project will be developed across Kamle, Kra Daadi and Kurung Kumey districts. It has an estimated cost of 26,069 INR-Crore and a planned capacity of 1,720 MW. Meanwhile, the Kalai-II project will be developed in Anjaw district on the Lohit river. It will have a capacity of 1,200 MW with an estimated cost of about 14,000 INR-Crore. The Kalai-II project has a completion timeline of 78 months. Both projects will include supporting infrastructure such as roads, bridges and transmission systems.

Once completed, the Arunachal hydro projects will significantly increase renewable power generation capacity in the region. They will also support grid stability and strengthen power infrastructure in Northeast India.
