CM Conrad Sangma unveils 488 INR-Crore road projects in Jaintia Hills

CM Conrad K Sangma on Thursday, May 28 laid foundation stones for multiple road projects worth an estimated 488 INR-Crore in East and West Jaintia Hills districts, Meghalaya. The projects will cover a combined length of over 108 Km. Authorities plan to improve regional connectivity, tourism access and logistics infrastructure across the coal-bearing region.

The projects include a 355 INR-Crore road upgradation package funded by the World Bank under the Meghalaya Logistics & Connectivity Improvement Project (MLCIP). The work will upgrade the Dkhiah–Sutnga–Saipung–Pala–Semmasi corridor in East Jaintia Hills. Additionally, authorities will strengthen the Dkhiah–Sutnga–Saipung–Moulsei–Haflong road. The scope also includes improvement of roads leading to Chympe Waterfalls and Khaddum. Further, the government will construct the Shkemtalang–Lumshyrmit road along with a major bridge over the Myntdu river connecting NH-6.

Officials said tenders for the major road works have already been floated. Meanwhile, construction activities will begin within 45 days. The projects will be implemented in phases across East and West Jaintia Hills districts.

Once completed, the Jaintia Hills road projects will strengthen road connectivity in Meghalaya’s eastern region. The infrastructure upgrades will improve access to tourism destinations and support long-term economic activity in the area.
