Kerala proposes 60,000 INR-Crore high-speed rail corridor from Thiruvananthapuram to Kannur

The Kerala High-Speed Railway (KHSR) project will establish a fully elevated standard-gauge double-line rail corridor between Thiruvananthapuram and Kannur. The proposal has been submitted by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) through an interim report to the Central and State governments. The Kerala high-speed rail corridor requires an estimated investment of 60,000 INR-Crore. It aims to reduce travel time between the two cities to 3.5 hours.

The corridor will extend 473.20 Km from Thiruvananthapuram City (Poojapura) to Kannur (Mundayad). Furthermore, it will include 23 stations with an average inter-station distance of 21.5 Km. The line is designed for a maximum speed of 200 kmph, while trains will operate at speeds of up to 180 kmph. The initial phase will deploy 12-coach trains with a seating capacity of 800 passengers, expandable to 16 coaches in the future. The project will also feature a dedicated 10 Km airport connectivity road for the proposed Kannur airport link.

Once completed, the Kerala high-speed rail corridor will significantly reduce intercity travel time and improve regional connectivity across the state. The project is will strengthen multimodal transportation links by connecting major urban centers and airport infrastructure.
