BEST approves transfer of Dharavi and Kalakilla depots for redevelopment project

The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking has approved the transfer of Dharavi and Kalakilla bus depot for the Dharavi redevelopment project in Mumbai. The two depots are spread across an ancticipated 11.58 Acres. The approval will enable redevelopment works linked to the larger Dharavi Rehabilitation Project.

As part of the proposal, the contractor will construct a temporary bus depot on 6.17 Acres within the existing site. The temporary facility will accommodate parking for 145 buses and include supporting infrastructure and staff amenities. In addition, the contractor will develop two new permanent multi-storey bus depots at separate locations with a combined capacity of around 470 buses. One depot will be developed across 8,602 SqM, while the second depot will span 10,544 SqM. Both facilities will include bus parking areas, depot offices, and associated operational infrastructure. The new depots will be completed in seven years after the work order is issued.

Once completed, the Dharavi depot redevelopment project is expected to modernise bus depot infrastructure in Mumbai. It will also support uninterrupted public transport operations while enabling large-scale urban redevelopment in Dharavi.
