Sustainability as a philosophy begins at the conceptualisation stage. A truly sustainable healthcare facility is designed to serve not only current needs but also those of future generations. Discussions on sustainability often focus first on longevity, carbon footprint, and energy consumption. Sustainable design addresses all of these while also extending a building’s lifespan, reducing costs, and offering a smarter approach to planning and constructing hospitals.

The Need for Sustainable Healthcare Infrastructure

Hospitals consume large amounts of energy and water, and as temperatures rise and extreme weather and water scarcity become more frequent, sustainable architecture directly protects patient safety, strengthens operational resilience, and secures long-term viability.

Institutional healthcare projects are increasingly adopting sustainable design frameworks like GRIHA and the IGBC HealthCare Rating. These standards are evolving from mere compliance checklists into performance-focused tools that drive reductions in energy use, lower lifecycle costs, and improve accreditation prospects. By the next decade, sustainability indicators will play a growing role in shaping investor confidence, capital flows, and hospital valuations, especially for major multi-speciality facilities. Additionally, higher capex on energy-efficient systems could lead to low opex in hospitals. One of our projects, namely, L.H. Hiranandani Hospital, has a platinum LEED rating, received this past year. This also adds a distinct prestige to the name of the facility.

Designing Hospitals with Sustainability at the Core

Design-wise, climate-responsive and sustainable strategies are becoming core to hospital planning. Façade optimisation to limit solar heat gain on south and west faces cuts cooling demand; also, having less glass on façade mitigates HVAC costs; adaptive HVAC zoning tightly controls temperature-sensitive areas such as ICUs and operating theatres while enabling natural ventilation or mixed-mode systems in low-dependency zones. Vertical planning that encourages stairs and ramps for non-critical movement reduces dependence on mechanical lifts and cuts energy use. Incorporating renewable energy, water recycling, passive cooling, and durable, low-carbon materials further boosts sustainability and resilience. For Instance, one of our projects, i.e. Madhav Netralaya Eye Institute & Research Centre in Nagpur, is designed to reduce load on HVAC costs by keeping the facility ambiently cool. 

Economic Benefits of Green Hospitals

These measures provide clear economic returns: lower energy and water use reduce operating expenses across a building’s life, enhance system reliability, and increase resilience during power or water interruptions. In practice, sustainable designs are not only better for the planet, but they’re also operationally smarter, financially more judicious, and better positioned to deliver resilient healthcare as climate challenges intensify.

Patient-Centricity

Another important aspect of sustainable hospital design is the growing emphasis on human-centric healing environments. Access to natural light, landscaped green zones, improved indoor air quality, and noise-controlled spaces contribute significantly to patient recovery, mental well-being, and staff productivity. Studies increasingly indicate that thoughtfully designed healthcare environments can reduce stress, shorten recovery periods, and improve overall patient outcomes. Sustainable architecture, therefore, goes beyond environmental responsibility; it creates healthier, more compassionate spaces that support holistic healing experiences for patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals alike.

As India’s healthcare infrastructure continues to expand, the integration of sustainability into hospital planning will become not just desirable but essential. Future-ready hospitals will need to balance technological advancement with environmental stewardship, ensuring that healthcare delivery remains resilient in the face of climate-related disruptions and resource constraints. By embedding sustainability into every stage from design and construction to operations and maintenance, the healthcare sector can play a transformative role in building greener cities, reducing environmental impact, and creating a more responsible and resilient future for generations to come.
