Jim Thompson’s Oriental Odyssey Fabric Collection, available at Dialogues by Nirmals, looks closely at the surfaces of Thailand’s past.
Century-old temple murals, painted manuscript cabinets, stone mosaics, gilded lacquer, antique porcelain and architectural ornament are redrawn and reworked as richly detailed fabrics for contemporary interiors.
Jim Thompson’s Oriental Odyssey: Translating Thailand’s Decorative Heritage
The collection explores what happens when a historic reference changes material. A motif once painted onto a temple wall can reappear woven into a substantial textured cloth. Porcelain-inspired botanical lines gain dimension through contrasting yarns. Gilded architectural silhouettes soften across silk blends, while repeating stone and mosaic geometries acquire weight through chenille.
Material determines much of the collection’s character. Fine linen carries hand-painted watercolour imagery with clarity, while silk-lampas weaving gives larger compositions of dragons, flowers and foliage an almost mural-like presence. Elsewhere, satin grounds feature gilded threads, and coiled embroidery creates botanical forms whose movement recalls the sweeping tail of a Siamese fighting fish.
Color moves between regal and weathered. Gold appears against black in a reference to traditional lacquerwork, while mineral tones, softened neutrals and brighter accents draw from murals, ceramics and temple decoration.
Rather than simply reproducing historic patterns, the fabrics translate them through weave, embroidery, scale and yarn, allowing Thailand’s decorative vocabulary to be experienced through touch as much as sight.
