The Pune Nashik railway project has reached a key milestone. Indian Railways has completed the detailed project report (DPR) for the revised corridor. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that Railways will proceed with the new alignment. The corridor will connect Pune, Ahilyanagar, Sainagar Shirdi and Nashik. The revised route received approval following technical studies that found the originally proposed direct alignment unfeasible. The Center approved the new alignment in December 2025
The revised corridor will run from Nashik through Sainagar Shirdi, Puntamba, Nimblak and Ahilyanagar before reaching Pune via the Chakan industrial belt. Indian Railways has completed the DPR for doubling the Nashik Road–Sainagar Shirdi rail line. Additionally, it has sanctioned 240 INR-Crore to double the 17 Km Shirdi–Puntamba section. Railways has already completed doubling work on the 80 Km Puntamba–Nimblak stretch. Meanwhile, contractors are carrying out doubling work on the 6 Km Nimblak–Ahilyanagar section. Further, Indian Railways has prepared a DPR valued at an estimated 8,970 INR-Crore for constructing 133 Km of new double railway lines between Ahilyanagar and Pune via Chakan.

The Pune Nashik railway project will strengthen rail connectivity across western Maharashtra. Additionally, the revised alignment avoids the sensitive GMRT zone at Khodad while maintaining regional connectivity objectives. The corridor will support industrial activity in the Chakan manufacturing belt and improve connectivity between key urban and economic centers in the region.
