Cabinet approves 15,041 INR-Crore railway and highway projects across 5 states

The Union Cabinet has approved 5 infrastructure projects across West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Bihar. The projects carry a combined an estimated investment of 15,041 INR-Crore. The approvals include four railway multi-tracking projects and one highway expansion project. The railway projects will add about 410 Km to the Indian Railways network.

The railway works include a 175 Km fourth line between Kharagpur and Bhadrak in West Bengal and Odisha. The scope also includes a 75 Km fourth line between Bhadrak and Haridaspur. Additionally, the projects cover 90 Km of third and fourth lines between Gudur and Gummidipundi. Another 72 Km section between Cuttack and Paradeep will receive third and fourth lines. The railway projects are scheduled for completion by 2030-31. Meanwhile, the highway project will expand 8.5 Km of the Muzaffarpur-Sitamarhi-Sonbarsa corridor on NH-22 in Bihar to four lanes. The highway project is expected to take 30 months to complete.

The railway highway projects will expand transport infrastructure across the 5 states. Further, the additional railway capacity will support the movement of passenger and freight trains. The railway works are also expected to improve operational efficiency and service reliability. Meanwhile, the NH-22 expansion will reduce travel time between Muzaffarpur and Sitamarhi from 2 hours to 1 hour.
