Studio Pallavi introduces Holding Space, a furniture collection rooted in life-centric design and material authenticity. Crafted from aged Sheesham wood, the collection explores how furniture can shape experiences beyond function. Instead of defining objects through a single purpose, Holding Space encourages a more intuitive relationship between people, objects, and the spaces they inhabit.
The collection draws from the philosophy of celebrated woodworker and designer George Nakashima, who viewed wood as a material with its own inherent character. Accordingly, Studio Pallavi approaches the design process through observation and understanding. The studio allows each piece of wood to influence its final form rather than imposing rigid design outcomes.
Material Selection and Craftsmanship
Every piece in the collection begins long before it reaches the workshop. Studio Pallavi sources Sheesham trees that are more than eighty years old from Punjab’s Malwa region. The wood then undergoes natural seasoning for over two years without chemical intervention.
As the logs are cut into planks, the material reveals decades of natural history through flowing grain patterns, knots, cracks, tonal variations, and irregular edges. Rather than concealing these characteristics, the studio preserves them. Consequently, each piece retains the individuality and memory embedded within the wood. Craftspeople then hand-sand every surface and apply a food-safe tung oil finish.
Design Language Inspired by Traditional Living
Holding Space draws inspiration from traditional Indian ways of sitting, gathering, and inhabiting spaces. Low heights, organic forms, and open-ended functionality encourage a more grounded interaction with furniture. As a result, a piece may serve as a table, seating element, or resting surface depending on how users engage with it.
This flexibility does not emerge from space-saving strategies or convertibility. Instead, it reflects older lifestyles where adaptability naturally shaped the use of objects and spaces. Through this approach, the collection balances simplicity with richness while maintaining a strong connection to everyday living.
Joinery and Form Development
Traditional craftsmanship remains central to the collection. Studio Pallavi avoids nails and screws throughout the manufacturing process. Instead, artisans rely on handcrafted joinery techniques that accommodate the natural movement of wood over time.
During the design process, the studio also looked to Punjab’s endangered river dolphin found in the Beas River and Harike wetlands. Its fluid form inspired a softer interpretation of the traditional butterfly joint. This influence introduces subtle organic detailing while reinforcing the collection’s relationship with nature.
Holding Space by Studio Pallavi moves beyond conventional furniture design. It brings together material history, craftsmanship, and everyday functionality through a thoughtful and restrained design language. By preserving the natural character of aged Sheesham wood and embracing traditional making techniques, the collection creates objects that connect people to memory, nature, and the rhythms of daily life.
