The 20-year-old residence had gradually fallen out of sync with its occupants. Spaces such as the basement office and former bar no longer served their intended purpose. Therefore, the design focused on reorganizing the layout, improving circulation, and upgrading services while respecting the integrity of the existing structure.
Restoring House of Continuity Through Spatial Transformation
House of Continuity is a ground-plus-two residence with an entertainment-focused basement. At the heart of the transformation lies a reimagined vertical core. A light fabricated staircase connects all levels and serves as the project’s defining architectural intervention.
The staircase rises beneath a skylight, drawing natural light deep into the home. Vertical circulation becomes a luminous and engaging spatial experience. Simultaneously, the intervention improves connectivity between floors without disrupting the existing structure. The ground floor accommodates the living and dining areas, which encourage interaction and shared experiences. Above, the bedrooms are carefully reoriented to improve natural light and ventilation.
Light, Air, and Everyday Living
A major transformation occurs in the basement. Previously dark and underutilized, the space now opens onto a landscaped sunken courtyard. This intervention introduces daylight, fresh air, and greenery while creating a direct connection to the outdoors.
Enlarged windows further improve the quality of the interiors. In addition, staggered floor levels and carefully detailed transitions support seamless movement throughout the home. Together, these elements prioritize light, ventilation, and spatial clarity, making the residence more functional and vibrant.
Material Palette and Interior Character
The interiors reflect the project’s philosophy of adaptation and continuity. Rather than reinventing the home, the design builds upon its original character. A neutral palette of soft beiges, warm greys, and natural tones creates a calm environment that can age gracefully over time. Exposed brick walls remain unplastered, introducing texture and authenticity throughout the residence.
Joinery and fittings draw inspiration from vernacular forms. Their restrained detailing brings warmth without unnecessary ornamentation. Meanwhile, carefully selected décor and architectural elements reinforce a sense of timeless simplicity. Greenery appears throughout the home, softening boundaries between interior and exterior spaces.
Modern Upgrades Within House of Continuity
While the original shell remains intact, the project incorporates several critical upgrades. Existing air-conditioning and plumbing systems had reached the end of their lifecycle and required comprehensive replacement. The new design integrates user-friendly automation systems for lighting, HVAC, and shading. Automation by Loutren and lighting by Lumatics improve efficiency while maintaining ease of use.
Structural upgrades include strengthening the existing grey columns. The design also retains the pitched roof, preserving a key aspect of the home’s original architectural language. Meanwhile, the project improves thermal and energy performance through solar panels and a sustainable HVAC system.
Landscape Integration and Basement Transformation
The introduction of a sunken courtyard represents one of the most significant interventions in House of Continuity. More than a landscape feature, it fundamentally changes how the basement functions and feels. The courtyard establishes visual and physical connections between the lower level and the outdoors. Landscaping extends across terraces, transitional zones, and interior spaces, creating a continuous relationship with nature. Lighting strategies support plant growth and reinforce the immersive character of the environment. Consequently, the home develops a stronger connection to its surroundings while enhancing everyday living conditions.
House of Continuity challenges the idea that aging homes must be replaced to remain relevant. Instead, it demonstrates how thoughtful restoration can address contemporary needs while preserving architectural memory. Through strategic interventions, upgraded systems, and a respect for the existing structure, the project presents a balanced approach to residential transformation.
